You know that exercise is good for you, right?
But, let’s be honest it can be a struggle to do it!
Well, you are not alone.
The human race has not evolved to exercise.
We have evolved to conserve energy and therefore it goes against our natural instincts to exercise. (Daniel Lieberman, a professor of human evolution and biology at Harvard University)
However, that was fine when during the day we were physically active, hunting, foraging, squatting on the floor and continually moving, surviving to get food or not be someone else’s food.
Our lives today are so comfortable, we are extremely sedentary and for most of us, food is plentiful and effortless to obtain – that now we need to ignore our evolutionary response. We need to exercise to remain healthy.
But knowing that doesn’t help most of us. Sofa or exercise? We’d choose the sofa!
The most common reason I have experienced for people to start exercising and taking their health seriously.
But until this reason becomes urgent, we just ignore it and take our health for granted.
The one reason that gets a lot of people off the sofa and exercising is…pain!
That’s right! Most of us only listen to our bodies once they start shouting out at us in pain. Our body is giving us a deadline, an ultimatum.
‘Get moving and exercise….or I will make you suffer!’
Without that deadline, we continue quite happily with our habits. You know your health is important, you don’t need me to tell you that. But it’s not until it becomes urgent that most people do something about it.
Now, you don’t need to live to exercise. I’ll tell you that I do not think about exercise every waking moment, I am not a fitness fanatic, but I know I do want to be strong enough and mobile enough to enjoy doing all the things I want to do in life. I want to be able to live. (This last year has shown us what it is like to just exist).
I want to exercise so that I can live!
