‘Who are you?’ said the Caterpillar.

Uncategorized Feb 20, 2023

Who are you?” said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I—I hardly know, Sir, just at present—at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.

What do you mean by that?” said the Caterpillar, sternly. “Explain yourself!

I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, Sir,” said Alice, “because I am not myself, you see.” —Chapter 5, Advice from a Caterpillar.

Do you sometimes feel like Alice?

The time in my life when I can relate to this the most is when I became a mum. When I became a mum, I lost Gila.

This may sound dramatic and it happened gradually, so gradually that I didn’t really notice until I’d forgotten who I was. Who I really was?

However, as Alice says...‘It’s no use going back to yesterday because I was a different person then.' I didn’t want to go back to who I was before, I wanted to create a new self, a new identity that included being a mum.

This has taken some time and has been a period of huge personal growth in my life which I am so grateful for.

Now, you may be wondering what this has to do with your fitness.

Your identity is a key part of being successful with your fitness and looking after your health.

If you are the type of person who looks after everyone else first and then does her exercise, then you will always struggle to find time for yourself.

If you are the type of person who is always busy, then you will always be too busy to exercise until you commit to NOT being a busy person.

If you are the type of person who always puts her exercise off until tomorrow then you will never get started, until you become a person that takes action.

In order to be fit and healthy and have time to exercise and look after your health you need to BE that person.

You can have the best plans, the best trainers, the best gym, the best classes, and the best intentions but if you are not BEING a fit and active woman then your fitness and exercise will be hit and miss.

Once you become a woman who prioritises her health and exercises then actually doing it becomes easy.
As James Clear in his book Atomic Habits ‘You don’t need to convince someone to go to the gym who training is part of their identity'
